COVID-19 Pandemic, Stimulus Packages and Stock Returns in Vietnam

This paper investigates the impacts of COVID-19’s new cases and stimulus packages on daily stock returns five key economic sectors (Finance, Fast-moving-consumer-goods (FMCG), Healthcare, Oil Gas, Telecommunication) in Vietnam – one best countries world for handling COVID-19. The research team uses Pool OLS method, with panel data 11 342 observations from 107 listed firms these period January-June 2020. findings are (i) all sectors’ negatively affected by confirmed COVID-19, hardest hit is financial sector, followed FMCG, healthcare, oil gas, telecommunications sectors. did not have many cases, but low average income makes investors consumers more careful hesitate to spend/invest; (ii) contrast prior studies, accelerate growth sectors, order most least affected: finance, telecommunication, FMCG. slow implementation made skeptical potential firms, they assess as signs downturn. fact leads different recommendations Vietnamese Government combating
